| Introduction: Tasting multiple vineyards and vintages of DRC in one sitting is an experience, an education and a true pleasure in the most profound sense of each of these words. Each wine has a unique personality that changes and evolves in unexpected ways as it breathes. I have never tasted a wine that generates the same degree of anticipation. The history, the legend and the price of individual bottles would seem to create an insurmountable mountain of expectation. Such concerns are brushed away once the tasting begins. The wines are captivating. They demand and reward rapt attention. They reveal themselves one layer at a time, though the process is not predictable based on the evolution of any other wine I have tasted. Tasting a series of DRC wines provides an education into what great wines can be. Each vineyard has a personality and each year is unique. Expectations are exceeded, because in retrospect one has no idea what to expect. I was and I continue to be blown away. |
